The Ruby Lit Fest: Celebrating 40 Years of Literary Magic

From April 16 to April 23, 2025, our school proudly hosted THE RUBY LIT FEST, a milestone event commemorating 40 years of literary exploration, imagination, and storytelling. What an incredible week it was—filled with energy, creativity, and a shared love for books!

This year’s theme paid tribute to the most iconic reads from the 1980s, 1990s, 2000s, and 2010s. Our classrooms turned into time machines, transporting students through stories that have inspired, comforted, and shaped generations. From timeless tales to modern classics, the festival was a nostalgic and enriching journey through the decades.

Students from Nursery to Grade XII participated in a wide range of activities—literary discussions, dramatizations, art and craft inspired by books, storytelling sessions, and thematic projects. Each grade brought a unique perspective, showcasing the joy and depth that reading can bring.

To ensure a seamless experience, we provided:

- An Event Planner with detailed timelines,

- Grade-wise Activity Instruction Sheets

- Digital Reading Lists, and

- Other essential resources, all shared in advance through our blog.

These materials helped teachers and students engage deeply with the festival’s offerings, making the event both efficient and meaningful.

The celebration culminated in a spectacular finale on April 23, aligning with World Book Day—a fitting conclusion to a festival that truly honoured the written word.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to all students, teachers, and parents for their enthusiastic participation and support. Your involvement made this event not only successful, but memorable.

Let’s carry forward the spirit of  THE RUBY LIT FEST—where the past was honoured, the present was celebrated, and the future was inspired, one book at a time.

Happy Reading!

Melange Week at DAV Public School was a joyful celebration of imagination and storytelling for our kindergarteners. The festival began with a cheerful colouring session, where children brought characters like Arthur to life with vibrant crayons.

The fun continued with a Finger Printing Activity inspired by Clifford and the Big Ice Cream Mess. Tiny fingers created colourful Clifford cutouts, sparking laughter and creativity.

Children then enjoyed the story of Franklin, followed by a tearing and pasting activity using green origami to craft Franklin’s shell. A cotton dabbing activity helped create a soft and charming Hippo using grey tones.

A show-stopping highlight of Melange was the Character Ramp Walk, where our little stars stole the spotlight! Dressed as their favourite storybook characters, they marched down the stage with pride and personality, dazzling the audience with their adorable confidence and charm. To cap off the literary celebration, our young storytellers spoke about their beloved characters. With sparkling eyes and expressive voices, they shared what made Clifford, Franklin, Arthur, and Rabbit so special to them — from kindness to curiosity, each word was full of heart.

Melange  wasn't just a festival — it was a celebration of creativity, confidence, and childhood wonder. A truly magical week filled with colour, laughter, and unforgettable memories!

REPORT:

As part of the school’s momentous 40th anniversary celebrations, this year’s Melange Week was transformed into an extraordinary literary celebration—The Ruby Lit Fest. Held in honour of this significant milestone, the week-long festival was a vibrant homage to the world of books, imagination and the timeless magic of reading.

Themed around the profound influence of literature, The Ruby Lit Fest sought to inspire students to delve deeper into the enriching world of stories, poetry and expression. With the belief that reading nurtures both the intellect and the soul, the festival was thoughtfully curated to ignite a lifelong passion for the written word.

Throughout the week, the campus buzzed with literary fervour as students across all grades participated in a diverse spectrum of literary pursuits. From storytelling and poetry recitations to book reviews, creative writing, author studies and dramatic readings, each activity served as a platform for students to showcase their talents, hone their literary acumen and immerse themselves in the joy and power of language.

A particularly moving moment during the festival was the collective Reading Pledge undertaken by all students—a heartfelt promise to embrace reading as a vital part of their lives. With hands on their hearts and books in hand, students pledged to read regularly, respect books as valuable companions and seek knowledge, empathy and inspiration through the pages they turn. This symbolic gesture reinforced the school’s vision of cultivating not just readers, but thoughtful, imaginative individuals.

The grand culmination of The Ruby Lit Fest took place on April 23, 2025, in perfect harmony with World Book Day, a global celebration of authors, books and reading. As the institution proudly commemorates its 40th year, it continues to champion the values of holistic education, where literature remains a cornerstone of both intellectual and emotional growth.

Reading books is a powerful way to gain a deeper understanding of ourselves and the world around us. Reading books allows us to explore new ideas, worlds and emotions. ‘Melange – The Literary Week’ gave the students an opportunity to explore the world of our rich Classics through an array of intriguing activities. On the 25th of April 2023, the students of class VI participated wholeheartedly in an interesting activity designed for them - ‘Tour of the Caves.’ The enthusiastic sixth graders were asked to act as tour guides and conduct a tour to the famous caves where Tom and Huck, from The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain, found their treasure. Students were seen engaged in preparing colourful maps showing the route to the caves and writing scripts for the tour guide. It was indeed an enriching learning experience for them.

Theme: Timeless Fables

Dear Students,

Fables are short stories that are designed to convey a moral message to the reader. They are common across folk cultures worldwide and have been used to pass on the values and moral lessons to people. These short tales were once passed down as stories to teach listeners the difference between right and wrong, give advice on proper behaviour and manners, and offer maxims to live by. The moral of a fable is usually stated at the end. Fables talk about virtues and vices and intend them to be learned by readers.

Fables feature anthropomorphized animals and natural elements as main characters, making them extremely engaging for children.  Although fables typically employ animals to portray characters, the fact that these stories are passed down over generations in different cultures, highlights the diversity of our world. By experiencing stories from different cultures, children can discover valuable insights about another group's values, beliefs, history, practices and customs.

These stories have been passed down to new generations since time immemorial with Aesop’s fables, Panchatantra Tales, the Hitopadesha, and the Jataka Tales, being the most popular of these short stories. Aesop’s Fables are a collection of stories credited to Aesop, a Greek slave and story-teller thought to have lived between 620 &560 BCE. The Panchatantra, compiled by a learned Brahmin named Vishnu Sharma, is a collection of inter-related animal fables in Sanskrit verse and prose. All these fables found their way to different parts of the world through oral channels and translations. They substantially influenced medieval fabulists. However, while many of the best known fables are indeed ancient in origin, the form still survives today in modern writing. We can see it in works such as George Orwell’s Animal Farm and Richard Bach’s Jonathan Livingston Seagull.

Relation of Fables to Folktales and Fairy Tales:

Folktales are a kind of stories that get passed on from generation to generation. Fables and Fairytales are a kind of Folktales with a quality of timelessness. They develop as different people tell them over time. Fables are characterized by talking animals while fairy tales are full of fantasy and magical world. There is no hidden meaning in a fable, and it is meant to convey a moral truth. Fables can be in prose or poem, but Fairy tales are always in prose.

Fables are ancient magic, will stay alive centuries from now and continue to inspire and illuminate.

Come, happy children, hold our hand,

Let’s go across this wondrous realm of Fables….

New friends await you….Explore, Read and Enjoy!
