HOPE - THE ESSENCE OF LIFE

"Haruka, will you be alright?" My partner asked me.
"For a millionth time, yes! Honestly, dear, you worry too much. If I could win against the world's greatest threat, what harm can a mere 2 hour do to me?"
"Yeah", she looked up with a pretend sternness, " but you are not an immortal, are you? Take care of yourself"
After a round of playful banter, I bid her farewell, grabbed my bag and rushed to the train station to catch the earliest train to Kumamoto city which was also my home city.

My parents relocated their job headquarters to Japan a few years prior to my birth. We lived a blissful life for quite some time, until that tragic day.

It all started a few years ago. I was in my laboratory. My team and I had started a new project and we were examining a genetically modified virus. The virus was in its final phase of modification when a  colleague of mine accidentally dropped one of the petri dishes containing the virus still in its fatal stage. Suddenly mysterious fumes started coming out of nowhere. People who came in contact instantly started showing weird behaviour. It was as if they had turned into walking corpses. Everyone rushed and screamed in a frenzy.
Slowly this disease spread all over the world. Whole civilisations turned into dust in just a few weeks.

Being the head scientist of the most prestigious genetic engineering laboratory, all the responsibility lied on me to issue a public apology and to find a cure for this bizarre illness.

I somehow brought together a team of distinguished scientists and researchers from all around the world and we worked hard day and night, but all was in vain. All the hope of humanity returning to normal was lost.
One day, we were searching for some medicinal herbs in a forest situated in a nearby town, Takamori. I was lost in my depressing train of thought that I didn't realise that I wandered towards a totally different path than what was initially planned and of course, like a graceful woman that I am, I panicked and burst into tears.
I walked aimlessly for what felt like an hour and found mysterious statues erected along the path. Filled with curiosity I couldn't help but follow the trail and eventually arrived at a shrine which seemed very familiar. After an intense brainstorming session, I realised that it was The Forest Shrine-Kamishikimi kumanoimasu Shrine. As soon as I entered the mystical gateway, I felt the air thinning. Suddenly the words of the local, who claim that this woodland harbours spiritual creatures, flashed through my mind. I trudged to the top and looked around for a sign of life.
Without a warning, I saw something flashing in my peripheral. In the initially vacant place, stood an elderly monk gazing at me with serene and unwavering eyes, as if he was looking directly through my soul. I immediately bowed in greeting.
He beckoned towards the praying aisle.

"I understand what you are going through. Failure is not something that lasts long if you consistently work for improving it and learning from your mistakes. When you think you have lost all hope and that you hit rock bottom, just remember the only way you can go now is up. Don't stop putting in your best efforts in everything you do because what you do will benefit not only you but the entire humanity." He shifted slightly on his seat and looked into my eyes." Don't lose faith in yourself."
Saying that I was in shock is an understatement. I bowed gratefully and the next moment I looked up he was gone and in his place stood my companions, all set to return to the lab.

After two long and painstaking years, we found the cure to the deadliest pandemic ever recorded in human history. Although losses were in millions, which also included my family, the lives we saved were tenfold.

That day in the shrine, whether it was real or merely a hallucination, really changed my outlook on life.

Story by Vanshika, Class X-I

Hope:The essence of life

It was a pleasant day in Salinas Valley,California,USA. The sun was shining bright with a mild breeze. The city was a little towards the outskirts of the city. Jerry was a small farmer living with his family in a small house built by his ancestors. He had a young little daughter,Noori. She was about 9 years old. She was a cheerful and charming child. She was always giggling and laughing around the house and keeping the mood light even of her surroundings. Jerry and his wife ,Rachel, loved her a whole lot. Although Jerry earned meager by selling his crops, which were mostly maize and potato and they didn't even have any other earning asset in the family as Rachel was a housewife,he wanted to fulfil every bit of his daughter's wish. He never wanted to let her feel poor even if they had less money.Although he himself was uneducated,he sent his daughter to an elementary school nearby, where she studied with full dedication and due to her friendly and attractive nature, she soon made many friends with whom she went to play every evening in the garden nearby. As per her usual schedule Noori would say goodbye to her parents with a beautiful smile and go for playing outside. Days passed by, Noori was getting weak day by day. She ran a high temperature with regular coughing. She had a dry throat and couldn't stop crying. At first Rachel thought it to be a common fever but it kept on growing. She became worse each day and suddenly had breathing issues. Rachel informed Jerry with extreme worry,"Jerry, she is running with high fever past 3 days and its not coming to an end even after being on pills." They quickly took her to the hospital which was nearly an hour away from their farm. The doctors looking at her shivering took her to the emergency ward. There they tested her for about half an hour. Outside in the waiting room, Jerry and Rachel couldn't keep calm. They were getting impatient. They ran from one door to another again and again. As soon as the doctor came out of the ward,he reported, " I am afraid to tell u that she is suffering from Covid -19. Being unaware of the disease they asked the doctor to tell something about it. Doctor made  them sit down and calmed the situation and said,"Look, it's a new virus which has been growing widely across the world and is highly dangerous. It is a communicable disease and can be spread very fast." Rachel just burst out in tears at the very moment she heard that. Jerry while controlling his tears asked the doctor with a fear," So..so is there any cure? How much time will it take?" He lowered his eyes and replied with a low voice," I am afraid sir,but there has been no cure found yet. But she has to be quarantined for a fortnite. It's all upto to the Almighty now,we'll try our best. All the best." Because of the circumstances they had to take up a health check up of both of them too. Fortunately, none of them had been affected by the virus yet as they might be coincidently washing their hands continuously which kept the virus away. Rachel couldn't stop crying and Jerry was in a dilemma what to do. He had an unconditional love for his daughter and he was keeping himself in control to support the family. He could do nothing else than counting on the God. He prayed continuously for the health of his daughter. When Noori got to know about her condition, she was horrified and lost the confidence that she would not be able to live now. She refused to eat and just thought of dying as soon as possible. She didn't wish to live anymore. She lost all her hope. But her parents didn't. They prayed every day!! Each time u look for them, they would be sitting in front of the small temple built in the hospital. One nightNoori, took a firm decision that she no longer has a desire to live. So she decided to sneak out of the hospital without anyone knowing. She found the opportunity and was almost near the  exit when she surprisingly saw her mother crying in the arms of her father and him having so much faith in the God that he couldn't stop mumbling the prayer. She realised that she was’t alone. If she died, she wouldn’t die alone ,her parents' laughter and happiness would also gonna vanish with her. She couldn't let that happen. She took her decision back and went back to the bed. She then had a ray of hope or shall I say two-her parents. She slept with a little smile on her face and woke up with the same elegance she had before. She soon recoverd from the virus and hugged her parents tight. They thanked the supreme power for accepting their requests and bringing back the happiness of the house back. Noori never told anybody about that night and everytime she thinks about it,she blushes about the fact that she has the best parents in the world and the virus couldn’t break the bond. Her hope were her parents.

THE BOY WHO SAVED
By
Varu Malhotra, X-E

He was the most impish, yet the loveliest creature on earth, my brother, James Severus Potter. His favorite game was James versus Albus war and he always used to win the battle, cheater! “James, there’s no world without you because you were my world.  Mom, dad, Lily, we all love you and we’re going to miss you like anything. Goodbye mate, love me from heaven!” Albus finished the eulogy. His brother had died of ‘Fleaserz’, the deadly disease discovered a couple of days ago.
***
Albus, Rose and Scorpious sat on the Hogwarts dining table. The previous day, they were tested for the presence of a microbe ‘Gnomula’ that caused Fleaserz and also the one that caused James’ death. The trio was determined to create an antidote for the same with the help of their potions teacher, Mr. Filius. They were going to accomplish an arduous task and James’ death intoxicated them with willpower, endurance and hope.
“Gnomula attacks the blood capillaries. They swell, gradually burst and due to lack of oxygenation, organs stop working and the patient dies within 24 hours.” Rose explained.
“Um…OK! Let’s work on it.”
***
Two months had passed by. Even after plentiful research and inquiry, reading heaps of books, testing multiple potions and studying herbs, something was missing and the antidote was imperfect. All optimism was getting lost. That night, Mr. Filius was cleaning the dungeon while the three sat engrossed in the books they had borrowed from the library.
“You are a mug, Albus.” James announced in the Potters’ dining hall. “Really, there’s nothing you can do.”
Outside the church after James’ funeral, Ginny cried for the millionth time. “Albus, whenever James said that you can do nothing, he actually meant that you can do anything you wish to.”
The flashback was over but lit up a thousand hopes. Albus stood up to help Mr. Filius with the cleaning. The mortar and pestle slipped from his hands and the tiny purple leaves in it fell inside the cauldron which had the unfinished antidote on the stove.
“Oh my fizzyweeds, those were precious.” Mr. Filius cried.
“Wait, did you just say ‘fizzyweeds’!”, Scorpious exclaimed and read aloud from the book “Fizzyweeds protect blood vessels from wear and tear, swelling, bursting and cell damage.”
Rose stirred the potion and drizzled it into a vessel containing a sample of Gnomula. “That’s it!” They heard those words of contentment after ages. “This needs to be tested.”
The next day at lunchtime, the headmistress Professor McGonnagall announced, “Three geniuses of Hogwarts have prepared the antidote for Fleaserz. We are grateful to Mr. Albus Potter, Miss Rose Weasley and Mr. Scorpious Malfoy.” Applause filled The Great Hall and all the eyes were fixed at the trio. Someone approached and said, “Thank you, they’ll save my mom now.”  Albus thought about James who would have been proud of him. The Daily Prophet too was adorned with the heading-‘Hogwarts’ students save lives’. “All thanks to you, Albus!” Rose said, “You’re the boy who saved.”

H.O.P.E.-HOLD.ON.PAIN.ENDS.
She was so disheartened and depressed. A leading archer of India was lying on the bed just before a week to the Olympics. Rita Dixit, a leading sports personality of India, met with a severe accident on the way to the airport. Her flight was about to depart when her taxi got hit by a fast-moving truck near the airport. After 18 hours, when she woke up, she saw that she was lying on a hospital bed. Soon she got to know what had happened with her. She started crying with tears rolling down her cheeks when she was informed about her broken legs. She asked if she could ever walk again, but her doctor replied negatively. She broke down from inside. She thought that her life was of no use now, but her family and friends continued to motivate her; they were very supportive. But her condition didn't improve. Her parents sent her to antidepression classes, spent quality time with her, and invited her friends to their home. But their continuous efforts made no change in her health. Then, at last, when everybody had lost hope, Rita's sister came up with a great idea. She went to her sister and told her the latest happenings and then asked her to wake up early the next morning because she was going to take her somewhere. Unwillingly, Rita said yes. The next day she took Rita to an academy of Archery for the specially-able people. When she asked her sister, why had she brought her there, she said smiling," Sister, you are a talented archer, and the whole world knows this. You cannot lose hope. This accident was your destiny. You have to move on, and start practicing for the next Paralympics. We all know you can do it. You are an inspiration for everyone. Please join this academy and start practicing. An accident cannot stop you from achieving your dream." Hearing this, Rita thought that her sister was right; a small accident cannot be claimed as a failure. She needs to move on and work hard to achieve success and fame.
She thanked her sister and said, "Thanks sister, I will surely not let you down. I will join this academy and practice hard for the next Paralympics and make my family & country proud." Rita had 3 years to practice for the Paralympics. She practiced day & night to fulfil her dream. Then finally, the day of selection for the Indian archery team for Paralympics came. By the luck and tough practice she was selected in the team. She happily went to the Paralympics. She qualified the semi-finals but her finale was with one of the best archers in the world. She was quite nervous but she soon remembered her sister's words. She thought that she should not lose hope. With great determination and willpower, she defeated her opponent. When she returned to India with a gold medal, on the airport a huge crowd of people were waiting for her arrival. In the press conference, when she was asked about her success mantra, she simply said, “Never lose hope. Hope is 'HOLD ON PAIN ENDS'."

THE READING PLEDGE

MELANGE 2020

D.A.V PUBLIC SCHOOL, SECTOR-14/10A, GURUGRAM

World Book Day, also known as World Book and Copyright Day, is an annual event organized by the UNESCO to promote reading, publishing, and copyright. It was first celebrated on 23 April 1995 to commemorate the death anniversary of William Shakespeare alongside the births and deaths of several other authors of esteemed reverence.

Our school's annual literary gala, Melange 2020 commences on the same date. But going with the present scheme of things, Melange '20 explores virtual waters as it takes off online for the first time ever. With you equally being a part of the journey and its success, let's go through these testing times armed with our ever-flowing emotions. A host of exciting activities await you, to honour not only the greats in the field, but also your own equally great and undying love for everything literary. All the students are to actively participate from their homes. Staying positive, upbeat and beating the blues; has never been better and more entertaining. The restrictions in place cannot restrict or inhibit creativity of the gifted  and talented. The celebration of languages make us appreciate all the skills that enhance and embellish every language. Therefore the thrust of activities in all the classes would be to hone speaking, reading and writing skills.

We welcome all our students to wholeheartedly and enthusiastically participate in online activities and competitions planned for each class.

Remember when we develop our language skills we develop our personality, enhance our expression and foster a better understanding all around.. Let the merrymaking of Melange '20 begin.
